Concrete handles inland East Bay heat, does not burn and needs little care. It is not right for every spot, and this page says where pavers or gravel do better.
Concrete suits the Diablo Valley for plain reasons. It does not soften in summer heat the way asphalt can. It does not burn, which matters in a region that thinks about wildfire and embers. It gives termites nothing to eat. A light-colored slab reflects sun instead of soaking it up. And a well-built slab asks for very little: a wash now and then, joint sealant kept in good shape and a sealer if you want one.
It is not the right answer everywhere, and we say so. On ground that moves a lot, pavers or gravel can be easier to adjust later. Right beside a large protected oak, a solid slab can harm the tree and the tree can lift the slab. Where a city or the regional stormwater rules limit hard surface, a permeable choice may be needed for part of the yard. And where utility lines are due to be dug up soon, a surface that lifts out makes more sense.
What makes concrete last in Concord is what goes under it and into it. Clay has to be dealt with by a compacted rock base. Steel keeps cracks tight. Joints tell the slab where to crack. Slope sends winter rain away. Curing in hot weather protects the surface. When those five things are done, concrete is a long-lived, low-care surface for driveways, patios, walks and floors.
Why concrete? in Concord: common questions
Is concrete better than asphalt for a Concord driveway?
For most homes, yes. Concrete stays firm in heat, lasts longer and needs less upkeep. Asphalt costs less at the start by national figures and is easier to patch. We explain both and you decide.
Does concrete always crack?
Small shrinkage cracks are normal in every slab. Good work puts them inside the joints where you do not notice them. Wide, uneven or growing cracks point to the base, the soil or water, and those can be prevented.
When would you tell me not to use concrete?
When a protected tree would be harmed, when the surface has to come up again soon for utility work, when hard surface limits apply to your lot, or when the ground is moving too much to trust any rigid slab without engineering.
